Rev Karla's Blog

I Wish It Was Over, But It Is Just Beginning

by Rev Karla December 17, 2022

I’m writing this blog in the wee hours on Sunday, November 13th. This has been part of my ‘normal’ for about 8 years. Something awakens me that feels like a spiritual nudge, an invitation to arise, write, then rest. It doesn’t happen every night. But when it does arrive, I know that sleep will not return until I heed the call, grab my ipad and give form to the words dancing in my head.

Enlightenment

by Rev Karla December 03, 2022

Awakening is Happening in the Little Moments of Living

A gentle warning: In this writing I share a story about a newborn puppy that was actively dying. For anyone who has held the space of a loved one while they were taking their last breaths, you will discover there is nothing out of the ordinary about this story—an animal’s dying process is similar to that of humans. Still, the innocence of a newborn puppy may prove too much for some. If so, this is the writing to pass over. If you are staying, know that I handle this story with the reverence it deserves.

Chasing the Belonging

by Rev Karla November 20, 2022

The Lonely Side of Deconstructing Your Faith

“Chasing the belonging.”

She said those words during our podcast recording. We had just spent the last hour together in a conversation that was so comfortable, as if we’d known each other a lifetime. Perhaps our souls did, because there was an ease in which we navigated heavy topics about the tension that now exists in this country, the challenges of peeling away indoctrinated layers of belief, and the desire to find ‘your people’ when you’ve lost your spiritual community.

Onward

by Rev Karla November 05, 2022

I’m writing this blog in late October. It will post the Sunday before midterm elections.

And I’m terrified.

There isn’t one sector of humans in the United States that isn’t at risk of losing their rights.

The Bible is Holding You Hostage

by Rev Karla October 23, 2022 1 Comment

You need to hear something.

Are you ready?

Here it is.

The Bible will never say what you need it to say in order for you to be free from the dogma that was part of your religious heritage.

The Blessing and the Curse of Ancestors

by Rev Karla October 09, 2022

This isn’t the blog I intended to write.

But something happened. Something that jostled my sense of who I am. Its relevance in my life deserves light, because I believe it will resonate with you as well.

When Darkness Comes

by Rev Karla September 25, 2022

Embracing the wisdom of the Autumn Equinox

As a child, I always looked forward to the first day of fall. My reasons were entirely selfish, as I eagerly anticipated the arrival of my early October birthday. The withering flowers, the turning leaves, the slightest scent of decaying foliage wafting through the air and of course all things apples intensified my excitement as the day of my birth edged closer.

Smash the Patriarchy!

by Rev Karla September 10, 2022

Smash the patriarchy.
We’re mocked for saying it.

Accused of radical — even violent — rhetoric - which is laughable.
It’s said by those who fear patriarchy’s demise because of the power this antiquated, broken system gives them.

Can We Truly Be Better Angels?

by Rev Karla August 06, 2022

I imagine President Lincoln hunched over his desk, penning his inauguration speech that he would deliver to an extremely divided nation. As he wrote, he must have contemplated the importance of his words in fending off the threat of civil war and appeasing the fears of the people.

Your Spiritual Journey Starts Here

by Rev Karla July 10, 2022

This is my first blog after a much needed break. To say that I feel as if I’ve been swept up inside a hurricane these past few months is an understatement… and to say that I wanted to give up a few dozen times as I navigated challenge upon challenge is….well….you get the idea.

Demolish, Repair, Restore

by Rev Karla May 22, 2022

A Season of Healing
In 2013, my husband and I began a serious renovation project. Our 40+ year old home was in dire need of being rescued from its 1970’s design and we were looking forward to bringing our sacred living space into the current decade. Our excitement morphed into exhaustion after discovering the importance of contractor integrity and planning for the unexpected. Months after the original completion date — I vowed to never take part in another remodeling project.

Christianity's Day of Reckoning

by Rev Karla May 08, 2022

For a minute, it was somewhat entertaining.

The scenario would go something like this….

I would make a video disparaging the churches that are “welcoming” but not “affirming,” or who are intricately linked to white supremacy, which is inherent in American Christianity.
